Ronald was a student at the West of England College of Art from 1954 to 1959, during which time he specialised in Illustration. He was awarded the National Diploma of Design and the Art Teachers' Diploma (degree status).

He worked as a freelance artist, producing Travel Literature, guides for Counties of Britain , and even Wild West strip cartoons. In the 1960s he was employed to teach Art at Great Yarmouth Boys' Grammar School, and from 1963 in Taunton at Priorswood, later St. Augustines of Canterbury School. Now Ronald is retired from teaching and is able to paint full-time and take commissions for paintings and illustrations.
